“Whoever neglects prayer, Allah will send fifteen punishments upon him”?

  • Status: FABRICATED

Obviously, neglecting salah (prayer) is a a great sin and I invite myself and all of you to remain steadfast in it. One way is to remind each other about what our Prophet Muhammad [saws] has said regarding it and there are many authentic reports compiled by our illustrious ‘Ulama on this matter.

However the problem arises when we start quoting unauthentic reports out of so-called ‘good intention’ but lying on our Prophet Muhammad [saws].

Here is the entire sequence of the report copy-pasted (random version) :

The one who disdains the prayers will receive fifteen punishments from Allah. Six punishments in this lifetime Three while dying , Three in the grave & Three on the Day of Judgement.
1. Allah takes away blessings from his age(makes his life misfortunate)
2.Allah does not accept his plea(Du’aa)
3.Allah erases the features of good people from his face.
4.He will be detested by all creatures on earth.
5.Allah does not award him for his good deeds.(No thawab)
6.He will not be included in the Du’aa of good people.
1. He dies humiliated.
2. He dies hungry.
3. He dies thirsty. Even if he drinks the water of all seas he will still be thirsty.
1. Allah tightens his grave until his chest ribs come over each other.
2. Allah pours on him fire with embers.
3. Allah sets on him a snake called “the brave”,”the bold”
which hits Him from morning until afternoon for leaving Fajr prayer,from the afternoon until Asr for leaving Dhuhr prayer and so on.With each strike he sinks 70 yards under the ground.
1. Allah sends who would accompany him to hell pulling him on the face.
2. Allah gives him an angry look that makes the flesh of his face fall down.
3. Allah judges him strictly and orders him to be thrown in hell.

This one was fabricated by Ibn al-‘Abbas al-Baghdadi al-Attar, as was stated by the scholars of hadith such as

al-Hafiz al-Dhahabi in Mizan al-I’tidal who said : ”He (Muhammad Ibn ‘Ali) fabricated on the authority of Ali Ibn Bakr Ibn Ziyad al-Naisaboori an ascription of false Hadith concerning one who neglects performing prayers’.

al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar who said in Lisan al-Mizan : ‘This Hadith is clearly false, fabricated among the Sufi groups’ and others.

These two scholars are the undoubted authorities in the science of hadith so their judgements is from among the most learned-ones in this field.

You might have found this narration in a book written by a respectable scholar, but that doesn’t mean he exactly knew the opinion of muhadditheen on it. He actually would have loved to see you rejecting a fabricated narration.

  1. Dear Brother
    Assalam Alikum,This is to inform you that this hadith is not a Fake but it is a Zaeef Hadith and Zaeef Hadiths can be told for motivation (or for benefits) and it cannot be used for solving Religious Problems or issues and all Ulema have agreed upon this statement and this Hadith can be found in famous Islamic books Tambihul Ghafileen by by Shaikh Abul Laith Samarkandi , It Can also be found Book of Ibnu Hajar (Kitaab al-Zawajir),This hadith is also Quoted by Imam al-Suyuti and can also find in the book by Hafiz Ibniao Najaar and this Hadith is also quoted by famous Ravi Abu Huraira raah (R.A) . Hence it is clear by these facts that this Hadith is not fake and one can quote it.

    1. Wa ‘alaykum assalaam dear brother,

      First of all the hadeeth is not da’eef but mawdu’ (forged, fabricated). This has been explicitly mentioned, as said in the post, by the scholars such as al-Haafiz al-Dhahabi(renowned and acknowledged by all scholars too as ‘the’ expert, he also used to correct other hadith experts) in Lisaan al-Meezaan, and al-Haafiz ibn Hajar(commentator of shahih bukhari) and others. These two scholars are the foremost authority in the science of hadith, whereas the scholars you mentioned are not expert in hadith, rather in fiqh, which is a science apart.

      It is a well-known fact in academic circles that when sporadically there is ikhtilaaf among scholars on degree of authenticity of a hadith, we will take the verdict of muhaditheen over the verdict of fiqh experts.

      More over we don’t know if these esteemed scholars were aware of the defect of the hadith or not, which nowadays can easily be done.

      Furthermore, even if we accept the hadith is “just da’eef” then too there is a problem as for quoting such hadeeth for virtuous acts (fadhaa’il) as there must be conditions, namely:
      – the exhortation have to be based on an established rule which must be authentic;
      – the degree of weakness must not be too low (dhu’f ghayr shadîd) and the hadith must not be mawdu’;
      – and if possible, it is highly desired to mention that the hadith is da’eef such that reader are aware that the words can be from other than the prophet [sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam].

      -In this case, there is a clear-cut type of sanctions defined in the so-called hadith “by the prophet” :saw: but based on no authentic evidence;
      -If we accept other scholars did not consider it mawdu but highly weak then arise 2 problems: for security we will choose the verdict of it being mawdu’ over the da’eef, and the hadith is not just “weak” but highly weak so the condition is definitely not met;
      -and finally, the mention of it being weak is simple never mentioned, all that matters is to spread this lie unfortunately.

      Brother I am not trying to justify people to miss their salaah (na’udhu billah) but I just do it to warn our brothers and sisters of the warning of quoting such fabricated reports when made aware of it, because of course the one who is aware is not equal to one is not aware of that. That is why I strive to mail, post and spread this news to inform the maximum of my brothers and sisters.
      Besides there exist plenty of authentic narrations on the dangers of leaving salah, why don’t we narrate t-hem, is it because this forged report is more juicy to the eyes of common people? Is this sincerity in our ’eman?

      Now I cannot impose the decision on you, and often it is hard to change our vision of things when you hear the report all your life you cannot accept it directly that the report is forged, but Allah loves those who obey Him.

      After all this if you are in doubt and still prefer to quote it, then do remember that our prophet [saws] said: “Whoever tells lies about me deliberately, let him take his place in Hell.” (Bukhaari and Muslim)

      Every one is responsible for his own action and now that you are aware of it, you are not like the ignorant ones.

      Ma’a salamah.
